In My Shoes: Ade Hassan MBE

Ade Hassan MBE is a fashion designer and entrepreneur bringing inclusivity to the undergarment industry. Born in the UK to a Nigerian family, Ade wanted to be a businesswoman from an early age. She studied at Duke University in the US and earned a Master’s degree in economic development at SOAS in London. After graduation, Ade gained experience working in banking and research, before taking a year off to study French and a bit of sewing in Paris. In 2011, Ade came up with the idea for her own business and two years later she founded Nubian Skin. Bringing a truly innovative and impactful product to the market, Ade redefined ‘Nude’, making the term more inclusive and influencing other parts of the fashion industry to make a change. In 2017 Ade was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace for services to fashion. Follow @ItsAdeHassan

Tell us a little about you.
I’m Ade! Pushing 40 but still feel like I’m 25! I love travelling, fashion and life’s little pleasures. I’m married to the loveliest man and a mum to a very sweet two year old.  I’m the founder and CEO of Nubian Skin, a company focused on skin tone underwear for people of colour.

How do you start your day?
Usually my husband gets my son up and gives me some quiet time, and then he deposits him in bed with me for cuddles and an obligatory reading of a very beat up classic car magazine he’s obsessed with, or a chat about sea animals. I’m soaking up all the cuddles I can get as he’s growing up so quickly!

What is your fashion philosophy?
It should be fun and make you feel good.

Can you share your top tip?
Get fitted for a bra annually, wearing the right underwear in the right size can completely change the way you carry yourself.

Who inspires you?
My parents. Wanting to enjoy life to the fullest.

How do you unwind?
I need quiet, my brain is often racing, so it’s important for me to get a few minutes by myself just to sit in silence, no phone or distractions, just me - preferably with a cup of tea.

If you could visit anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would it be?
Tokyo

Can you tell us something you discovered recently?
A perfect red nail polish: Haute Red by Orly

What is the best part of your job?
My team, and creating things that help people feel seen.

Which shoes do you love this season?
Too many!! But particularly the Pearl Marina in Coral satin. They’re perfect for summer, and I’ve already planned a wedding outfit around them.
