IN MY SHOES | Caroline Chinakwe

Caroline Chinakwe is a Nigerian-born, London-based mixed media artist whose bold, unapologetic work celebrates Black culture while addressing the social issues that shape it. A graduate of the London College of Fashion, she began her career in fashion before developing her signature style—vibrant, layered compositions that merge photography, acrylics, and digital collage. Rooted in her Nigerian heritage, Caroline’s art portrays the strength, beauty, and individuality of Black men and women. With textured imperfections, confident headwear, striking hairstyles, and ornate adornments, her subjects embody cultural pride and self-expression. Discover the woman behind the art @Carolinechinakwe

Tell us a little about you.

I'm Caroline Chinakwe — an artist, multi -disciplinary created and founder of Chinakwe, a premium art and lifestyle brand that celebrates boldness, culture, and unapologetic self-expression. I’m also a mother of three, a mentor to emerging creatives, and someone who’s obsessed with colour, identity, and turning everyday spaces into art.

How do you start your day?

I start with a quiet moment to myself — a little prayer, some gratitude, maybe a stretch. Then I put on the telly to catch up on the day and try to drink water. If I’m not rushing to the studio or heading to a meeting,  I try to take a Morning walk in Hampstead Heath before the   day begins.

What is your fashion philosophy?

Wear your personality. I don’t believe in following trends — I believe in energy, emotion, and attitude. Whether it’s a headwrap, a graphic print, or a tailored blazer, what I wear has to feel like me and show you what I’m about.

Can you share a styling trick with us? Or your top tip (fashion, life, anything)?

Layer textures, not just colours. A silk scarf, a structured jacket, a touch of gold — mixing materials adds richness and makes any outfit feel elevated. And don’t be afraid to clash! Some of my best looks came from happy accidents.

What / who inspires you?

My cultures. Streetstyle and confident people. I’m constantly inspired by the tension between power and softness, tradition and rebellion. I love fearless creatives who dare to say something with their work,  they all inspire me.

How do you unwind?

To unwind I love  playing games on my phone. My 2 go to games  are Wordle and Woodoku which is a puzzle game. When ever I’m feeling overwhelmed I play 5- 10 minutes at a time and that relaxes and resets me for my next task.

If you could visit anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would it be?

Back to Lagos Nigeria — not just for the sun, food, or noise, but to reconnect with the raw, electric energy that fuels so much of my creativity.

Can you tell us something you discovered recently?

I recently discovered the importance of building muscles and strength training, especially for a woman like me in their 50s and those in peri or menopause cycle. Not only does it help with the symptoms but losing muscles increases the risk of osteoporosis.

What is the best part of your job?

Seeing someone connect emotionally with something I’ve created — whether it’s art on their wall, a T-shirt they wear with pride, or a piece that makes them feel seen. That moment of connection? That’s everything.
